Web Standards and Compliance
Web Standards and Compliance can be thought as a structured approach to employing best practice when designing and building websites. There are a number of different rules and guidelines which need to be followed depending on what standard the client wishes to achieve.
Whilst it would be an 'ideal' view to say that all sites should meet all requirements, in fact that would in practice be very restrictive. For example, for sites to be compliant with very old browsers, much of today's web technology couldn't be employed. Obviously some sites do need to be fully compliant such as sites for the blind, but most have a compromise and there are different levels of compliance to meet this requirement.
World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web.
The W3C state that websites should be accessible. (Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the Web). There are a number of levels which sites can be measured against under the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) and these are organised into three levels:-
- Level A
- Level AA
- Level AAA
