There is some debate over the use of flash. Some people use it as a preferred format, others refuse to use it at all.

While it certainly has its drawbacks compared with HTML, it does have its uses and when used correctly it does provide excellent interactivity and impact.

One of the major drawbacks with flash is that it's not well recognized by the search engines. (This is now improving, but is still not good). Sites that are intended to be ranked well on the search engines need to use flash with care. Avoid using flash for navigation and always insert flash files within HTML page code.

Some sites constructed using flash are unable to receive site statistics from the server log. This is important for sites that are interested in site traffic intelligence such as which pages people are looking at and which pages do people ignore.
